Patients in the chamber are given 100 percent pure oxygen under high pressure. In such conditions, the oxygen's availability for the lungs is upwards of 150 to 350 percent. Pressure is gradually increased, thanks to which the oxygen can move into parts of the body with worse blood flow that normally receive less oxygen in normal conditions. As a result, the oxygen finds its way to pulmonary alveoli, bloodstream and tissue. This, in turn, leads to an increase in the supply of reactive forms of oxygen and nitrogen, meaning that new blood vessels are formed in the body's tissue. The process also leads to a boost for the immune system.
